Their story

The story of Maati Mahila Samuh

The clay here is red and salt-heavy, and it has been dug from the same two ponds for four generations. Until the group was formed, families sold finished pots to a trader who came once a week and set his own price.

The group now fires collectively in a shared pit kiln, which cuts breakage and lets them produce through the winter instead of only in the dry months.

Two members travelled to Bhuj for a glaze workshop and came back with a food-safe finishing technique that lets the pots hold water for cooking without seeping.

“The trader counted the pots and told us the price. Now we count them and we tell him.”
Kavita Ben, group president · Maati Mahila Samuh, Gudamalani
